How long is an audiobook compared to the print book?
A useful rule of thumb is about one hour of audio for every 9,000 to 9,300 words, because professional narration runs at roughly 150 to 160 words per minute. This tool works it out from your page count and words-per-page: a 100,000-word novel narrated at 155 wpm is close to 10.75 hours of listening.
What narration speed should I use?
Audiobooks are typically recorded at 150 to 160 words per minute, and the tool defaults to 155. Nonfiction and technical titles are often a touch slower; some fiction narrators are faster. If a publisher lists the finished runtime you can reverse-check the rate, but the default is a good estimate for most commercial audiobooks.
How does playback speed change the runtime?
Directly and proportionally. Listening at 1.5× cuts the time to two-thirds; 2× halves it. A 12-hour audiobook is 8 hours at 1.5× and 6 hours at 2×. The tool shows both the base 1× runtime and the runtime at the speed you choose, so you can plan how long a book will really take on your commute.
Is faster playback worth it?
It depends on the book and on you. Many listeners comfortably follow familiar or lighter material at 1.25× to 1.5× and save hours; dense nonfiction, poetry, or a beloved narrator's performance are often better at normal speed. Speed up gradually — comprehension, not the clock, is the thing worth optimising.
