Dan Hurley’s journey to becoming a college basketball coach began long before he took the reins at UConn. Growing up in a family of athletes, Hurley was always drawn to sports. His father, a former college basketball player, would often take him to games and teach him the fundamentals of the game. Hurley’s early experiences in sports helped shape his passion for the game and instilled in him a strong work ethic. He went on to play basketball at the University of Connecticut, where he earned a scholarship and developed his skills as a player. After college, Hurley began his coaching career as an assistant coach at various colleges and high schools, working his way up the ranks.
The UConn Years
Hurley’s tenure at UConn began in 2018, when he was hired as the head coach of the men’s basketball team. At the time, the program was struggling, and Hurley was tasked with turning it around. Hurley’s first season at UConn was marked by significant improvement, with the team finishing with a 20-12 record and making the NCAA Tournament. Over the next few seasons, Hurley continued to build the program, recruiting top talent and implementing a new system that emphasized defense and teamwork.
He has also written books on the history of the NFL and the NBA, as a well as books on the history of the Yankees and the Patriots.
