The proclamations come as local libraries are working to encourage the renewal of current cardholders and the registration of new cardholders.
“Having a CBPL library card is really the gateway to discover more. The benefits of a library card are numerous and span well outside simply checking out materials,” said Antonia Krupicka-Smith, director of the Council Bluffs Public Library. A library card at the Council Bluffs Public Library also includes access to audiobook services like Libby and Hoopla. Also included are eBooks, large print books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, and even seeds. The library offers book clubs, story times, author talks, diverse programs, job search assistance, homework help, and craft and hobby classes. Cardholders can also use the card to check out cameras, sewing machines, board games and more. Books are now also available at the new library kiosk at Cochran Park.
“I encourage everyone to sign up for an account or make sure you know where your card is and that it is up to date,” Krupicka-Smith said. The Carter Lake Public Library offers many similar services to Council Bluffs. Its new Library of Things collection allows cardholders to check out items like metal detectors, knitting kits, outdoor games and STEM discovery kits. Members also have access to Kanopy, a streaming service, and Linkedin Learning, a program that provides online courses in business skills, creative fields and software. “Let’s celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month by discovering all that your library has to offer,” Zuerlein said.
