The library has a large collection of books, but the silent book club is not about reading the books. It’s about the space and the experience of reading in a quiet, peaceful environment.

The Concept Behind the Silent Book Club

The silent book club is a unique approach to reading and relaxation. It’s not about discussing books or sharing opinions, but rather about creating a peaceful atmosphere where people can focus on their reading.

We started with a small group of 5 teens and it has grown to a large group of over 50 teens. We have had some great discussions and some not so great discussions, but it’s been a great experience for all of us.

The Origins of the Book Club

The book club was born out of a desire to create a welcoming space for teens to discuss books and share their thoughts and opinions. The idea was to provide a platform for teens to engage with literature in a relaxed and informal setting. The library staff saw an opportunity to reach out to this demographic and create a space that would foster a love of reading and critical thinking.

The Early Days

In the early days, the book club was a small, intimate gathering of 5 teens. The group would meet once a week, and the discussions would be lively and engaging.

The Portage Lake district library silent book clubs for adults and teens will start up again for 2025 next week. The adult book club at the Keweenaw Brewing Company taproom will start at 6 pm on Monday. Teens will take over the teen readers area of the library from 4 to 5 pm on Tuesday. The teen’s club will also have refreshments available during the event.
